Prior to my retirement from my permanent position in
August 2003, I was a Principal Lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor
for just on 18 years. (Prospective graduate and intern students should

Other Details
Virtually all my teaching has been in the field of digital and data
communications. I taught subjects in the
Computer Science and Digital Systems undergraduate courses, but mainly worked in the
Master of Digital Communications.
I have retained some on-line information about the
subjects I taught. Some people still use the simulator I wrote
for the HDLC protocol.
My primary research activity has been in digital/data communications.
In addition, I work in applied computational linguistics,
particularly in areas relating to Japanese electronic dictionaries and
text processing (see the link below.)

I was quoted in an article in the Melbourne
Age recently. (You may need to disable style sheets or use this

In 2002 I supervised a Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) student, Ronald
Szeto, who developed a terrific TCP Simulator. (Ronald was the top honours
student that year.)
I have a particular interest in Things
Japanese, and in particular the above-mentioned electronic
Japanese/English dictionaries.
From December 2000 to June 2001 I was a Visiting Professor at the Research Institute for the
Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa (ILCAA) in the Tokyo
University of Foreign Studies in Japan.
I am also a member of the
board of the Japanese
Studies Centre (a consortium covering all the
Universities in Victoria dealing with Japanese matters)
