Monash University > School of Computer Science and Software Engineering > CSE1303 > Part B Pracs > Prac B1
In CSE1303 you will be introduced to a new operating system called Unix. This operating system is more suitable for program development than systems such as Windows or MacOS which you may have already used. You will be using Unix extensively for the rest of your course, possibly exclusively by the time you reach third year.
This prac is worth 10 marks if you complete it. To complete the prac, you need to visit the Online Unix Prac System (http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~unixprac/user/main.epl if you have an AuthCate password, http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~unixprac/guest/main.epl if you don't). This system presents a list of topics which will give you the basic skills with Unix that you will need for CSE1303. Read and do what the topics say, and try the exercises at the end of them. You will need to show your demonstrator evidence that you have completed all the topics to receive your ten marks.
If you remember your AuthCate password, visit http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~unixprac/user/main.epl, and enter your AuthCate username and password.
Click on the "Edit Sets" link, and choose the set called "CSE1303 Prac 1: Introduction to Unix". You can additionally choose the optional topic set if you want some extra exposure to Unix. Click on "Change Sets", and you will see a list of topics.
Now, just go through each of the topics one by one, and do what they say. (If you are currently reading the handout you received in lectures, five of the topics have been printed out and attached, because you won't yet have a web browser to read them. After you do those you can read the remaining topics online.)
The Unix Prac System remembers which topics you have completed, so when you come back to it later (as you will in second year) it will remind you which topics you've already done.
If you have forgotten or never received your AuthCate password, you can still use the Unix Prac system, but it will not remember which topics you've done, nor will it present the topics in a logical order. The URL is http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~unixprac/guest/main.epl.
Read and do the following topics in this recommended order. (If you are currently reading the handout you received in lectures, the first five topics have been printed out and attached, because you won't yet have a web browser to read them. After you do those you can read the remaining topics online.)
