SPIM

SPIM is a simulator for the MIPS R2000 microprocessor. It is available for Unix, MS Windows and Mac OS X.

Installing

To install SPIM, you'll need to do one of the following:

Precompiled packages

The simplest way is to let someone else compile it for you. This is an option if you are using MS Windows or some distributions of Linux.

• MS Windows: visit http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~larus/spim.html and download pcspim.zip.
• Debian GNU/Linux (potato, 2.2r5, i386): install the "spim" package in the non-free/electronics section, or use this .deb file: http://ftp.au.debian.org/pub/debian/dists/stable/non-free/binary-i386/electronics/spim_6.2-3.deb (Use dpkg -i spim_6.2-3.deb)
• Red Hat Linux (i386): install this RPM file: ftp://ftp.udoj.org/linux/udoj/RPMS/spim-6.3-1.i386.rpm (Use rpm -i spim-6.3-1.i386.rpm)
• FreeBSD (i386): visit this URL: ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/branches/-current/ports/emulators/spim

Compile it yourself (Unix).

To compile SPIM yourself you'll need to fetch spim.tar.gz from http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~larus/spim.html. Unpack this with

gzip -dc spim.tar.gz | tar xvf -

and read the README and other all-caps files in the new directory just created.

Since systems vary slightly, it's not possible to give a series of steps that will always work. You may have to experiment.
