CSE3020 course syllabus 

Subject Outline:

This subject mainly deals with basic data communication theories with the main emphasis on design issues and technologies of the two lower layers (physical layer and data link layer) of the communication stack. Topics covered include:

  • Data transmission.
  • Modulation and coding techniques.
  • Transmission media.
  • Multiplexing and switching.
  • Data link control techniques.
  • LAN technologies and MAC techniques.
  • Local area networks (Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, etc.,).
  • Frame Relay, ISDN and ATM networks.
  • Residential area networks (ADSL, cable TV).
  • Wireless LAN technologies and MAC techniques.
  • Mobile communications (1G to 3G).

Prerequisites:

COT2004 or COT2001 or CSE2318 or CSE3318.

Prohibitions:

CFR3012, CFR3213, COT3020, RDT3662.

Lecture:

Thursday 6 to 8pm  Link Theatre (Check timetables)

 

Assessment:

Examination (2 hours - closed book) - 50%


Assignment 1 - 25%
Assignment 2 - 25%
