A key problem, if attempts to infer both evaluation and search strategies are to be made, is the affect of an incorrect inference of the weights, which make up the evaluation function. The process of finding out if it is important to have an accurate evaluation function, was found as follows. The same process as used earlier for determining the search strategy is again applied here to demonstrate the importance of the evaluation function's accuracy. The operation of the chess program that tries each of the strategies is the same as before except that the
values for all four attributes are chosen at random before trying the set of five strategies. The
values in the data generation are uniformly random between different amounts. The values for the attributes lie in the domains Material = 0...10, Mobility =
,
Centre Control =
and the Attack attribute was between 0...10. The reason for the lower domains for Centre Control and Mobility are that the programs could easily run indefinitely unless black and white are made to attack each other. The inference program has set
values of Material = 5, Mobility = 1.0, Centre Control = 1.0 and the Attack attribute was set at 5.0. These values were chosen as they are in the middle of the random numbers that are chosen for the trial.
