Computer Science research is often exploratory and unplanned. Many of the ideas tried are proven to be flawed or less valuable than existing methods. Often new ideas will require a complete rewrite of the existing experiment, in this case software. While good modularisation can limit the area affected, this need to recreate at least some parts of the system is due to the nature of Computer Science research and can not be avoided.
