Menus and navigation

Where it is impossible to implement direct manipulation, or where there is no simple metaphor for the task at hand, we attempt to fall back on a menu style of interaction. In order to reduce the amount of space taken up on the screen by these menus, we favour pull-down or pop-up menus. By pull-down we are referring to menus that are dragged down from a menu bar, and by pop-up we refer to menus that may appear anywhere within some particular area of a window when requested (most likely by way of a right-click).
