Honours Research Project : Image Segmentation - Hybrid Method Combining
Clustering and Region Merging.

Abstract
A hybrid image segmentation scheme for grey level images is presented. The techniques used in the hybridization are to combine two of the well known image segmentation methods, clustering and region merging. The grey level images are segmented hierarchically. K-means clustering is applied first to the image to find the desired number of clusters in the image, where the number of clusters is automatically detected based on the automatic detection of clusters in colour images by Ray and Turi. The result of the clustering is then passed through region merging for post processing to remove noises or irregularities in images that tend to occur in clustering based segmentation methods.
