Welcome to my honours webpage. Here you will find information pretainign to my 2004 honours project.

My project aimed to detect defects in road surfaces. Of particular interest to this project was the cracking defect. Road autorites can use this inforamtion to keep roads well maintained. Cracks were the focus as early detection of cracks in road surfaces, allows maintenance to be performed before cracks develop into more serious problems, such as potholes and pop-outs.
In my thesis i present a a new method of semi-automated detecting of cracking artifacts in road surfaces from video footage. An overview of existing techniques and commercial implementations is also presented. The system presented uses a combination of new and existing image processing techniques, to extract the defect information. One technique is the use of a modified watershed algorithm to perform identification of the cracking artifacts. The data generated from this system can in turn be manually inspected. The system as a whole is far more efficient than common methods such as manual inspection and almost as accurate.

From the above menu you can access the thesis and research proposal which you can download and browse at your leasure. You can also contact me and view some comercial implimentations in the links section.
