The study of Optimal Foraging Theory (OFT) can be broken up into four areas of research: Field research, Laboratory Research, Mathematical Modeling and Simulations. Field research provides knowledge on how a species performs in their natural environment, laboratory research gives a more controlled environment so that specific aspects of a species behaviour can be studies without outside interference, and mathematical modeling allows an objective view of the abilities of a species. However, these areas have a few drawbacks. The field and laboratory research does not allow research into variations on behaviour, and the mathematical modeling becomes impossible when incorporating more than just the simple aspects of the model. These short comings can be overcome with the fourth area of research -- simulations. Through the use of simulations the behaviour can be modified and a larger scope of the problem can be incorporated and analysed. This project will create a simulation for the study of OFT for ant colonies using known models of ant foraging as a basis, with the intention of being as generic as possible.
