Interfaces Supporting Knowledge Discovery in Databases

Project OverviewDocument RepositorySnob OnlineUsability TestingSource Code
Usability Testing was carried out to determine the effectiveness of Snob-Online to improve the usability and knowledge discovery of Snob. The usability testing was carried out in three stages, breifly detailed below:

Stage 1 : Interface Comparison

The first stage of usability testing compared a minimal version of Snob-Online with Snob-vanilla. The version of Snob-Online was utilizing no extra analysis functionality and was displaying the same information as Snob-vanilla through a web interface. This stage was trying to determine the change in usability when the same information is presented through a command-line interface as compared to a web interface.

Stage 1 Questionaire

Stage 2 : Interpretation

The second and third stages of the testing involved users assessing the effectiveness of different analysis techniques in assisting them to understand the dataset. The second stage adds interpretation to the system, translating the slightly cryptic output of snob into easier to understand text.

Stage 3 : Visualisation

The final stage involves the use of a 3rd party visualisation package, Ggobi. The user can run functionality to output an XML file in the format of a Ggobi input file and then use this to gain a graphical representation of the datasets. Stage 2/3 Questionaire
