Summary

The literature surveyed has shown popular and deeply researched graph layout algorithms, as well as some new algorithms created to address limitations in previous work. These algorithms have tried to address the difficulty of achieving the aesthetic goals that determine whether or not a layout places the graph in an optimum position so that a reader can understand the contents of the final drawing. However not a lot of work has been done in incorporating graph layout techniques into current widely used interactive editors that allow constraints to be placed onto the graph, and that still enables the user to maintain a higher level of control.
