Dispatch optimisation and constraint modeling in the Australian National Electricity Market

The National Electricity Market Management Company (NEMMCO) is responsible for managing and dispatching electricity for energy requirements and ancillary services via a competitive auction process. Its core functional process for Scheduling Pricing and Dispatch electrical power is based on Linear Programming (LP). The limitations of the LP approach include difficulties in co-optimising the energy market and ancillary services, modeling physical constraints under assumptions of linearity, and calculating the price when the constraints were violated. This study investigates alternative non-linear optimisation approaches with the current regional nodal model, as well as the impact of alternative network design models, to help the industry utilise resources efficiently.
