Expertise and research interests

Digital signal processing (DSP) and fast algorithms, image processing, audio/image/video coding and compression, quality assessment and metrics for digital images and video sequences, variable bit rate video coding and transmission for ATM networks, multimedia signal processing and communications, DSP industrial applications, and fast digital signal processors, hardware and systems.

Background

Dr Wu completed his PhD research program in Electrical and Computer Engineering with the thesis entitled 'The Implementation of Multidimensional Discrete Transforms for Digital Signal Processing'. After receiving his PhD from the University of Wollongong, Dr Wu joined Chisholm Institute of Technology and then Monash University in 1990, where he is currently an associate professor in the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering. Since 1989, Dr Wu has conducted and completed R&D contracts for industrial organisations such as Telstra Research Laboratories and BHP Research in the areas of digital video coding and real-time image processing. Dr Wu has headed numerous research projects in digital video coding, compression and communications funded by Australian Research Council, Australian Telecommunication and Electronics Research Board and Monash University. He conducted a five-day DSP training course for electrical and electronic engineers, and computing professionals in 1993. Dr Wu has authored and co-authored over ninety papers in refereed international journals and conferences as well as commercial-in-confidence R&D reports in areas of digital signal processing and fast algorithms, image processing, video coding and compression, circuit and systems, automatic control and DSP education. For many years, he has been a referee in his areas of expertise for many international, prestigious research journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing (formerly the IEEE Transactions on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing/, the IEEE Transactions on Communications, the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, the EURASIP journal Signal Processing: 'Image Communication', Computer Vision, Graphics, and Image Processing: 'Graphic Models and Image Processing', Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation. Dr Wu was a co-chair of the 1998 1EEE Intelligent Signal Processing and Communication Systems. His current research interests include DSP and fast algorithms, image processing, audio/image/video coding and compression, variable bit rate video coding and transmission for ATM networks, multimedia signal processing and communications, DSP industrial applications, and fast digital signal processors, hardware and systems.
