Expertise
and research interests
Research interests and activities
are concentrated on networking; in particular protocol design, protocol
performance, network design, and routing methodologies. Approximately
20 conference papers and technical reports have been written in these
areas.
Background
Jim Breen received a BSc
in Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Melbourne in 1970.
and completed the CPS Programmer in Training (precursor to the Graduate
Diploma in Computing). In 1980 he received a Commonwealth Postgraduate
Course Award to complete an MBA at the Graduate School of Business Administration
at the University of Melbourne, in which he was awarded a degree with
distinction. He has also completed an Arts degree major in Japanese
at Swinburne Institute of Technology. From 1968 to 1975 Jim Breen was
employed as a programmer and senior programmer in the PMG's Department
and the Department of Defence (Signals Division) - primarily involved
in developing operating systems and message switching communications
software. From 1975 to 1982 he was a manager in the Systems Planning
Branch of the Information Systems Department of Telecom Australia, with
responsibility for planning the information processing infrastructure
of the organisation. From 1983 to 1985 he was employed as a senior consultant
with Coopers & Lybrand, specialising in telecommunications and computer
technology, with assignments in Australia and overseas covering: network
strategy studies, network and computer systems design, specification,
selection and implementation, post-implementation reviews, market studies,
and communications management. In 1985 he took up the position of Head,
Department of Robotics and Digital Technology (Principal Lecturer),
Chisholm Institute of Technology. This position continued into the merger
with Monash University in 1990, with his tenured appointment converted
to associate professor, and a fixed-term professorship until he stepped
down as department head at the end of 1996. He is now coordinator of
Digital Communications Programs for the Faculty of Information Technology.
Associate Professor Breen's work at Chisholm and Monash has primarily
focussed on the development and teaching of the Graduate Diploma and
Masters courses in Digital Communications. He has designed most of the
subjects, has developed course material for and taught many of the subjects,
and supervises many of the projects within the courses.
