Background
Dr Ray completed his PhD
in electrical engineering with the thesis entitled "The Effectiveness
of Features in Pattern Recognition." His PhD program was supported by
the Commonwealth Scholarships Scheme. After finishing his PhD in 1985,
he joined the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta where he worked
until 1990, initially in a lecturing position and then as an associate
professor. In 1987 he was awarded a Fullbright Scholarship to pursue
postdoctoral research, tenable in the USA during 1987-1988, in the area
of texture analysis of image. In 1990 he joined Monash University as
a lecturer. Since 1995 he has been a senior lecturer in the School of
Computer Science and Software Engineering.
Since 1985, Dr Ray has been
involved in a large number of internally funded and externally funded
research projects in the area of image processing and pattern recognition.
His research grant successes include one ARC large grant, two ARC small
grants and one faculty research grant. He has authored and co-authored
approximately 50 research papers. He has been a referee in the areas
of his expertise for a large number of international conferences and
journals. He has been a senior member of the IEEE since 1989.
