Background

Dr Yu received his PhD degree from the Institute of Image Communication and Information Processing, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai, China, in 1999, his MEng from the Department of Radio Engineering, and his BEng from the Department of Electronics Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, China, in 1996 and 1993 respectively. His research during the masters period was mainly on wavelet based coding of medical images. He proposed several new algorithms and implemented them on PC platform. The project was in collaboration with Nanjing Gulou Hospital. From 1996 to 1998 he was a key member of the Chinese HDTV research team which successfully designed and implemented Chinese first HDTV functional prototype, supported by a national key project. He was the technical leader of the HDTV decoder research group. In addition to the HDTV project, he also participated in DVB set-top-box, DVD player and most recently, video phone design projects. He joined Monash University in 1999 as a Research Fellow to work on an ARC Large Grant funded project on impairment metrics for evaluation of digital video sequences. He has published over 10 technical papers in national and international journals and conferences and has three Chinese patents pending. He has been the consultant of Shanghai Audio-Visual Company, a major Chinese consumer electronics company, on commercial HDTV receiver design.
