Background

Andrew P. Paplinski received the MEng and PhD degrees from the Faculty of Electronics, Warsaw University of Technology, Poland, in 1967 and 1980 respectively. From 1961 to 1981 he occupied a variety of teaching, research and managerial positions in the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Electronics, Warsaw University of Technology. During this time he supervised the design of mini-computer systems KRTM-20 and GEO-20. He was a recipient of numerous awards from the Ministry of Science and Technology. In 1982 he visited the Department of Computer Science, Australian National University, Canberra, and from 1983 to 1986 he was a Research Fellow and lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Adelaide, where he worked on multi-variable control systems. Since 1987 he has been a lecturer and a senior lecturer in the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. His research activities concentrate on investigation of algorithms from areas of image and signal processing, control systems, neural networks, from the point of view of their hardware implementation. He published over sixty papers and technical reports, and five (text)books. He collaborates with the Image Processing Group at King's College London and the Department of Ophthalmology, St. Thomas' Hospital, London, on the interpretation of the Posterior Capsule Opacification images. Other projects currently supervised include the hardware sonar beamformer, an image coding system based on the wavelet transform and lattice quantisation, and a hybrid analog-digital neural processor.
