I write to apologise and inform everyone that our original venue of the International Pacific was double booked for our meeting and I have had to change the venue. I now confirm that the CABS 2008 meeting will still be held on the 16th and 17th October and I have booked a function room at the Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort, which is located at 22 Lake Street, Cairns and is in walking distance from the International Pacific Hotel, the Reef Fleet Terminal, the Reef Casino, and the main shopping precinct. For those that wish to reconsider their accommodation booking, the Novotel hotel has very kindly offered a "special conference accommodation rate" to delegates, and have quoted $126 for a Superior Resort Room per night. The Novotel Oasis Resort has just recently undergone a 7 million dollar refurbishment and you can view the resort at this link .Please contact the Novotel on 07 4080 1888 if you wish to make a reservation (see below). Again our sincere apologies for this inconvenience. Leanne for Professor Paul Gadek |

All, Confirmation that the CABS 2008 meeting will be held on the 16th and 17th October. To ensure a range of accommodation options within easy walking distance of the meeting venue, I have booked a function room at the Pacific International Cairns, which is located on the Esplanade and adjacent to the Reef Fleet Terminal, the Reef Casino, and the main shopping precinct in Cairns. The hotel will also offer "special conference accommodation rates" to delegates, quoted at $135/night. The web address of the Pacific is www.pacifichotelcairns.com although you may also wish to check out the other hotels that are within one or two blocks of the Pacific ( http://www.cairnsconvention.com.au/citymaplrg.html). For information, the JCU Cairns campus is situated approx. 25mins drive north of the City, close to Smithfield and the northern beach suburbs. The campus is a little more than a decade old, with a student population of approx. 3,500. I'm happy to arrange a visit to the campus if this is of interest to anyone. The details of the meeting program is still in development, as also the dinner (on the Thursday night) and the registration fee. Two other items:

Dear all, At the 2007 meeting of CABs in Perth, I undertook to facilitate the 2008 meeting in Cairns. I am proposing that our meeting be held on the 16th and 17th (Thursday and Friday) of October, 2008. There is still some uncertainty as to whether the National University Governance conference will be held this year - if it is held, it is likely to be in mid October. I am not aware of any other scheduled or proposed events that may conflict with holding CABs on the 16-17th, but if you are aware of any conflicts, please let me know as soon as possible. Again I apologise for the lateness of this notice, and particularly to the other Qld Chairs who have offered their assistance in planning this event (much appreciated and welcome). I will be in further contact, either via group email and/or on the CABs website, as planning proceeds. Regards, Paul |

Trevor Hastings asked members a number of questions concerning the responsibilities of Boards in the distribution and allocation of resources, particularly where they impinge upon course-related issues. His Summary of Responses is available on-line. |

The 2007 meeting of the Chairs of Academic Boards will take place in Perth, WA, on Mon 22 October & Tue 23 October 2007. Please put this in your dairies now. More details will follow soon. Please note that at the Adelaide meeting it was also decided to invite the Secretaries of the Academic Boards to the meeting. For at least one half day we plan to have a separate parallel session for the secretaries. Can I also ask you, on behalf of the organising committee if you have any suggestions on important topics and/or speakers. We are currently working on the programme and would very much appreciate any input. See you in Perth! ---- Michael and the Perth team: Rod Oliver, David Plowman, Jo Ward & Doug Yorke
Professor Michael A. Borowitzka, |
| 20061205:1222 | The name has been settled as ChairsABs and the new web site is http://www.chairsabs.org.au (John Hurst, Monash) |
| 20061026:1508 | Michael, you could think of the acronym OzCABS as
standing for Australian Councils of
Academic/Boards/Senates, thereby solving your problem!
(John Hurst, Monash) |
| 20061026:1249 | One quibble is the title. At Murdoch University we have an Academic COUNCIL (not Board or Senate) so we have to fix the title. It would be nice if there were some consistency in terminology, but .... Maybe we can be a little more creative and call ourselves the Chairs of Academic Governing Bodies? What does everyone else think? (Michael Borowitzka, Murdoch) |
| 20061025:1628 | We need a better name for the organization rather than the Australian Universities Chairs of Academic Boards/Senates. Any thoughts? here's one: OzCABS (Australian Chairs of Academic Boards/Senates) (John Hurst, Monash) |
