The Concept

The idea of these discussions is to get you thinking about some of the broader issues of specification (objectives 8 and 9). Discussions are to be carried on in the Moodle forum page labelled according to the appropriate topic number. Remember that your contributions to the forum will be graded 0-5, depending upon your "intellectual contribution".

What makes an "intellectual contribution"? Certainly the originality and relevance of your post. But also the breadth and response of your posts. That is to say, an original post will score highly, but so will reasoned responses and counter arguments. Adding citations to other sources will also improve your mark.

The Practice

Discussion topics will be released on a regular basis, and will reflect upon recent lecture material. There is some advantage to getting in early, once the topic is released, since you can claim originality for the ideas you raise. But remember that marks are also awarded for rebuttal and counter argument, so don't rush to make statements that might get shot down easily!

Discussion will continue over two weeks, and will then close. I will try to give feedback on the discussion points made within a week.

The rules are fairly straightforward: stay on topic, and no argumentum ad hominem ("argument to/against the man"), or in other words (to use football parlance): play the ball, and not the man!
