The four S class instances were built between 1928 to 1930, and were three cylinder locomotives designed specifically for the express passenger service Spirit of Progress . For this service they were streamlined in 1937, and later converted to oil-burning post-war.

Unfortunately they were all early casualties of the railways' conversion to diesels, and were all scrapped by the end of 1954.
