Helen Armstrong

I got your email address of the website you set up listing old UNCS members.

I was in UNCS in 1973 as Helen Wrigley. After that (1974) I switched to UNSW Musical Society (later called Musictheatre) with some crossover of various connections with UNCS. I was finding UNCS singing in a difficult range for me, vocally. At the time I was an alto with some range into the mezzo, but much of what UNCS was doing was either not challenging enough in the alto range, or too high in the soprano range. MuSoc were doing a lot of G & S which was perfect for my vocal range, plus I enjoyed the dramatic side of it all.

Involved with both, and also possible knowing where Chris Allen would be, was Peter Mikula. Some time after Peter married, my husband & I were at their place for dinner when Chris Allen and his wife were also guests.

Peter was best man at our wedding, he married a girl he met at intervarsity choir camp one year (1977?). He's been living and working in Kalgoorlie for a couple of decades now. I'll email this link to him and see if he still is in contact with Chris Allen.

Also a member of UNCS was Cheryl McCaffery, who sang at our wedding. The last I heard form Cheryl, she was working in neurobiology.

Another name was Suellen Lemke. She was going out with Peter Foster for a while and also did some stuff with MuSoc. She was a brilliant Mae Peterson in Bye Bye Birdie.

I crossed paths with Peter Foster about 14 years ago - I was President of a charity, Peter came on board as Treasurer and became President after I resigned. I lost contact after that. I believe he resigned as President a few months after I did.

There were others whose names currently escape me. Peter Mikula might know of more.

I've not been singing much until recent years, when I briefly joined a local choir. I left for a couple of years but have recently been asked to take over that (now greatly reduced) choir and teach them to sing. It's a challenge. All donations of very simple rounds and SATB folk music, welcome. I've just been given the task of teaching them the entire repertoire of Christmas carols in SATB in the next three weeks. With no sheet music except an old hymn book, five choristers only (including me) only three of which can sing in tune. I'm hoping they let us wear paper bags on our heads.

regards,

Helen Armstrong
