Since leaving UNCS in 1973, John moved first to Canberra and ANU, then Melbourne and Monash University in 1987. John has been an academic all that time, and you can read more about him on his quite extensive web pages.
While in Canberra, John and Barbara joined SCUNA, and sang with them BC (Before Children). The arrival of Nathan in 1977 and David in 1982 constrained choral singing a little, but they both kept up some practice by singing in the occasional church choir at Canberra City Uniting Church.
One major choral achievement during this time was the performance of Honegger's "Joan of Arc", which having come from UNCS's performance of "King David" was a breeze! SCUNA joined with a number of other Canberra choral groups for this, and it was not nearly the trauma of King David, thanks to it being a concert performance only, with no dress-up or stage action.
John also had a short stint with MonUCS on arrival at Monash in 1987, but by then the choristers all seemed so young, and he didn't last very long with them. But a much more vigorous church choir at Glen Waverley Uniting Church sees Barb and John both singing at weekly services, with a repetoire that ranges from Bach to Rutter. See our choir page for more details.
Our most recent performance (1 Nov 2009) was "Let the Love Shine Through" by Carl Strommen - organist one Nathan Hurst, on holiday from the USA! Nathan's postlude was an impressive (even if I am a little biassed) rendition of Widor's Symphony No.6 (1st movmt.) Those of you who know your organ works will recognize this as a rather demanding piece!
At Monash, John has regular contact with Jim Breen (now retired), and Kristina Macrae (also retired), while his sons also see Conrad Leviston from time to time. Conrad sang at Nathan's wedding in Sep 2004. Small world!
