Finally the promised email about the arrangements for the bushwalk, or should I say stroll, on Sunday 26 April 1998. The intention is that we gather between 11.30 and 12.00 at the sun-dial at West Head, in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Unfortunately, being a National Park means you will have to pay to get in, the good news is that until May 1 it is only $7.50 per car ($9 after that date). We plan to walk the Challenger track, which is not particularly challenging, and offers glorious views and a side trip to some Aboriginal carvings, Pauline tells me. Thanks to Pauline for checking out the walking options. It is an easy walk, about 3 km all in, with large rocks and impressive views at the mid point, a suitable point for a picnic and reminiscing. It is the intention that we have an informal ceremony at that point.
We would like to make the occasion a celebration of John's contribution to our lives and UNCS. I am hoping that a few people with particularly close ties like Bevan Leviston (who shared an off, and Geoff Gould (with whom John shared a house and his love of bushwalking and skiing from memory) might say a few words, and that we can all share our reminiscences about John. We would also like to extend the occasion to the memory of Ross Worrall, who died some years ago.
Naturally we will want to sing, so bring any UNCS or SUMS song books you may have lying around, drag your voices out of the moth balls, and have a look at some of the old favourites, like Innsbruck, and Come Again, or even Dona Nobis. For those of you who think you need a warm up, this will be possible at the 'associated event' ie a gathering at my place on Saturday 25 April, from 5 pm. The address is 8 Simmons Street, Balmain - which can be reached by bus (442) or ferry. If anyone is in need of transport, let us know in your RSVP (also for the Sunday).
This get together will give us more time to catch up with each other, particularly out of towners. All are invited, partners welcome, but I would like some indication of numbers, so please RSVP ASAP but at least by Wednesday 22 April. Linda and I have been plotting this one, and we are suggesting a curry feast by means of all Sydney siders bringing their favourite curry dish, home made or purchased, and we will supply the rice, pappadams and other trimmings. BYOG svp, we'll have soft drinks and juices.
