Feedback from 2006
What were the best aspects of the unit? | What aspects of this unit are most in need of improvement?
In 2006, this unit was offered as CSE2302 Operating Systems, and taught by a different lecturer (Charles Greif). These are the comments from Clayton students.
One way of showing students that their feedback has been used successfully is to require every instructor to cite on the course syllabus one recent example of how student evaluations have helped improve this particular course or have helped the instructor to improve his or her teaching. This seems like a low cost, but highly visible way to show students the benefits of teaching evaluations. (It may also have the salutary effect of encouraging faculty to ponder the information contained in student evaluations and to act upon it.) from : Yining Chen & Leon B. Hoshower, Student Evaluation of Teaching Effectiveness: an assessment of student perception and motivation, Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, Vol. 28, No. 1, 2003
What were the best aspects of the unit?
- None.
Hopefully this will not be an empty set this year. - Practical and theoretical.
Maintained. - The practical (laboratory) classes were fun to do, and helped me to learn.
Good to hear! - The assignments weren't too hard.
? - Though tough, this has been one of the more enjoyable units that i have undertaken. The lecturer, Charles is very helpful in clarifying the often vague lecture notes. Charles is definitely one of the more approachable lecturers
Hopefully this attribute can be continued! - The tutorials and labs were good and complimented (sic) the learning objectives.
They are changing significantly this year. I'd be pleased to hear of any feedback about how well the changes are received. - The lecturer knew his stuff and gave enough information across to clearly understand the topic.
Hopefully continued! - Lecturer is easily approachable by students if they need clarification on the course material; answers questions about the subject and related pracs/tutes in a clear to understand and friendly manner.
Hopefully continued! - Reasonable content.
The content does increase this year, consistent with faculty standards for a 6CP second year unit. - The pracs and assignments were useful and complemented the study material.
See previous response on labs. - The lecturer was very knowledgeable on the subject, however, his delivery of the content is too dry and boring.
Please let the lecturer know if the pace of lectures is not appropriate!
What aspects of this unit are most in need of improvement?
- The practical aspect seemed to be tacked on busy work and didn't seem to work to indicate or enforce the knowledge needed for the understanding the topic, neither did it help to clarify its understanding either. It came across more as a separate entity than part of the topic being covered.
The lab work has changed significantly this year, and follows themes developed through the semester. See the Timetables Page to get an overview of this. - Tutorials were a waste of time. Our tutor had no planned structure and barely achieved anything useful or helpful. The lecturer was too slow in moving through the lecture material, often digressing for too long. The lecturer was too slow in updating / providing links to course material, often supplying them day or weeks after they were promised. Pracs were fine in terms of content, but more feedback / in-depth analysis of student work needs to be done. Often my prac demonstrator did not know what needed to be achieved in the prac and just checked on the day.
Again, this has changed significantly this year. See the Timetables Page to get an overview of this. - The pracs were difficult and the time allowed for completing it was insufficient.
Please give the unit coordinator (John Hurst) feedback on how these are going. - Most of the pracs (labs) were not clear as to what they required of you. Therefore I suggest that they should be explicit about what we are required to do instead of leaving a room to speculate.
This is being addressed in this year's labs/pracs. - Lectures! They were boring with both material and presentation.
Heaven forfend! We will try harder this year. Please be forthright in your feedback. Use the discussion pages. - The assignments and prac sheets were not handed out in enough time for you to receive proper help if needed. Plus no response was given on the assignments to date. Lectures were very far behind in the schedule and were taught in a very boring and tiring way.
Most of the lab sheets have been prepared well in advance, and are on-line. Assignments? - Milestones requirements need to be clearly communicated tutor (Charles Greif) did not front for 2 tutes and was at least 20mins late for at least 1 other. Tutor needs to do more preparation before attending tutes. Subject was totally disorganised - lecturer was not able to stick to schedule.
Will try harder. - The assignments came out fairly late (to close to the due date) and no real feed back has been provided as yet on the first assignment.
Will try harder. - The learning objectives are not specific enough. We're not sure what we need to know and what is extra knowledge.
The learning objectives have been rewritten. In addition, where learning objectives are mentioned in the on-line material, a little pop-up will show which learning objective is being addressed. See also the Timetables Page. - I think the lecturer not good at explaining and teaching since I always found myself lost in the middle without knowing what is he talking about during the lectures, and the lecturer does not explain much about the practical work at all and causing lots of people struggling on doing it. Hopefully this could be improve in the future.
Will try harder! - Change lecturer.
Have done! - Teaching speed.
I don't know what this means. Faster or slower? You tell me. - Improvement of the teaching skill, explain the practical lab clearly.
The university is endeavouring to improve the teaching skills of all academics. But students also have a responsibility to complain when they feel that something is lacking. If you don't understand something, ask a question. The only stupid question is the question that is never asked! - The practical tasks I feel are somewhat irrelevant to the material covered in lectures.
This year there is much greater integration. See also the Timetables Page. - The communication of assignment due dates, and release dates left a little to be desired.
This should be in the Timetables Page shortly. - More examples and codes.
Of what?
