Welshpool and Llanfair Railway

The Welshpool and Llanfair Railway was originally opened in 1903, closed in 1956, and re-opened as a preservation railway in 1963. There is now some 8 miles of track, which extends to Raven Square Station on the outskirts of Welshpool, and opened in 1981.

It was at this spot in 1964 that the railway was threatened by severe flooding, which weakened the piers of the viaduct over which the train can be seen passing in this photo. With assistance from the Royal Engineers, the viaduct was strengthened and reopened in 1965.
