421 Class Co-Co diesel electric

The 421 class were a refinement of the 42 class GM loco, built by Clyde, and having a V-16 two-stroke 1950hp diesel power plant. The two-stroke engines of this class gave the loco a quite distinctive sound, said to stir the hearts of many a devout steam enthusiast! The main difference from the 42 class was the addition of a full cab at the "B" end of the loco.

  • Description : 42110 and a 42 class with the Intercapital Daylight at Cootamundra station. I thought the second loco was a 44, but Wayne Eade wrote to say:
That "44 class" behind 42110 in your shot number 11980 is in fact a 42 Class unit (either 4203 or 4206, as these were the only two units in service in the original red-lined tuscan by January of 1982. I'd go for 4206, as 4203 always seemed to be the cleaner of the pair).
Nit-picking, I know, but isn't that what border-line asperger types like train spotters are all about anyway?
Of course it is, Wayne, and thank you for that vital piece of information!
