Some stuff that didn't seem appropriate to catalogue elsewhere!

Class 0-4-2

Four of these locos were built by Robert Stephenson for the fledgling Sydney Railway Company, which commmenced operations on 29 Mar 1855. They were withdrawn by 1879, but fortunately one was saved and is preserved for the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences at Ultimo (now know as the Powerhouse Museum).

  • Description : Brett writes:
    No 78 at Thirlmere, on the day of its official unveiling, first Sunday of March, 1998. On your page, you list No 78 as No 1, saying that No 1 visited Thirlmere during the 1970's. I'd suggest that No 1 hasn't been out of Sydney since mid 1877, when it was placed on shunting duties. Certainly, since the Powerhouse Museum has had it in their custody/ownership (since 1879) No 1 hasn't been further from the centre of Sydney than Castle Hill, where it was extensively restored in the early 1980's.
    No 78 was constructed to the same design as No1, indeed No 78 was one of a batch of four constructed on what were originally intended to be replacement frames for Nos 1-4. The tender that No 78 had, whilst in service and up to 1938, was one taken from Nos 1-4. This tender finally returned to No 1 in 1938, when No 1 was displayed in Martin Place for the Sesqui-Centenary of settlement celebrations. No 78 received a modified Z-24 Class tender for display at Enfield, which it retained until 1976. This tender was too badly rusted to be salvageable, so it was replaced with the original tender taken from 1709 in 1964. Circa1980, the Z-17 Class tender was replaced by a tender construced on the frames of the former SMR Weedkiller wagon, which was originally a tender off one of Nos 1N, 2N, or 3N (later Nos 388, 389, 390).

Z10 Class 2-4-0T (pre 1924 F class)

  • Description : This loco was used until a few months before this photo was taken as the Cardiff Railway Workshops shunter. Built by Henry Vale to a Beyer-Peacock design, this loco was one of three from a class of 18 original locos to survive the Second World War. It is now preserved at Cardiff.


NSW Railway Miscellany

I lived in Canberra for 13 years, and was active in the ACT Division of the Australian Railway Historical Society . Included in this section are a few photos of some of the activities we participated in during that time.

  • Description : ARHS ACT Divn members hard at work repairing carriage bogies. On the jack is John Hurst (me!), with his back to the camera is ? ?, sharing a joke is Steve Buck, and Bruce Turner has his head down in the background. With his head down even further is Mark Gore. In the background is the (new) Canberra Goods Shed.

  • Description : The Colonel! Col. Kerry Mellor was responsible for the high military standard of presentation of theMouse(3102). Many was the time he would be seen polishing the steam dome, even to the point of leaping up on the (hot!) boiler to give it a quick wipe whenever we stopped to take water.

  • Description : A party of ARHS ACT members leaving Canberra Railway Station for Sawtell, on one of several "car attached" trips during the 1970s. The car concerned is TAM 1925, now sold out of the ARHS ACT collection, but at the time a very comfortable way to travel! The author and his wife (seen here pointing at the camera) held a twin berth cabin share in the TAM 1925 syndicate.

  • Description : 42110 and a 42 class with the Intercapital Daylight at Cootamundra station. I thought the second loco was a 44, but Wayne Eade wrote to say:
    That "44 class" behind 42110 in your shot number 11980 is in fact a 42 Class unit (either 4203 or 4206, as these were the only two units in service in the original red-lined tuscan by January of 1982. I'd go for 4206, as 4203 always seemed to be the cleaner of the pair).
    Nit-picking, I know, but isn't that what border-line asperger types like train spotters are all about anyway?
    Of course it is, Wayne, and thank you for that vital piece of information!

  • Description : Junee has always been an interesting railway scene, partly because Junee is very much a railway town, situtated as it is at the junction of the main south and Narranderra branch line. Here two 422s, one on a special ARHS train, occupy the platform roads, while a 442 performs some shunting of the yard. Incidentally, this photo also shows the difference in front-end lining of the two classes.

Along the Line in NSW

Dombarton Loop

  • Description : The fascinating yard arrangement at Dombarton. Behind the photographer is a pair of dead-end sidings: the main line to Sydney can be seen descending on the left. The leftmost of the two sidings joins the main line (out of sight), while the rightmost siding drops underneath the still climbing main line, and connects with a further siding to the left of the main line. All this is to avoid trains having to start against the grade, as would be required with a more conventional siding arrangement. The loco is uncoupling to start a rather complex manouevre to demonstrate the yard capabilities!

It was so cold I had to get up to light a fire to thaw myself out. That's frost you can see. I could only get the camera to work by heating up the battery on the fire!

  • Description : One of the so called "electric water columns", or water cranes, at Ryde. These were used to water steam locomtives when under the electric catenary system, to avoid crewmen having to expose themselves on the top of locos (to the overhead wiring, I mean).

  • Description : This interesting old bridge is, I believe, the Tenterfield Creek crossing at 487m on the Main North. This stretch of track is now disused, which is a pity, as it traverses some of the most picturesque scenery in NSW (Australia even).

  • Description : There seems to be more grass on the right of way than off it! Break of gauge station Wallangarra is now more than that: it is a break of journey station, as the 4'8.5" standard gauge to the left of the main station building is now out of service all the way to Armidale.
