A2 Class 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler

The Victorian Railways could not make up their minds about these locomotives: some had Walschart's valve gear, some Stephenson's; some had smoke deflectors, some not; and some had Boxpok wheels, and some had plain spoked.

It shows A2-798 and an unidentified AA class train engine, believed to be somewhere near Geelong. According to Wikipedia, the AA class were all withdrawn by the beginning of 1932, so this image must date from 1930 or earlier (thought in fact to be pre WW1). Note the freshness of the embankment). If anyone can shed further light upon it, please contact me!

Once the mainstay of the passenger system, the A2s were displaced by the R class in the post war period. Note that in comparison with her immediate predecessor A2-995 , A2-996 does not have smoke deflectors.

But (writes Paul Dalton of the South Western Railway Society) since this photo was taken the shed which can be seen in the background has since been demolished and reassembled in another part of the port precinct to make way for the restoration of "Heritage" Rail services back to the Port Of Echuca Station. Where the shed stands is now where the rail line runs. (Paul also comments that) A2 996 was scheduled for removal on 16 December 2002 to the WCR workshops at East Ballarat for restoration.
