Tracking Process and Protocols

Submission: Submission of papers, reviews and votes is electronic via our web interface, which extracts and records relevant information and triggers automated workflow activities.

Review Allocation: In the allocation of reviews, the Handling Editor makes every attempt to cater for reviewer profiles and preferences (see below). Beyond that, allocation is random.

Reviewer Preferences: There is a short window for Reviewers to indicate paper allocation preferences. Typically that window opens when we are still accepting some papers with an extended deadline for the current (or special) issue of the journal.

Review Process: Reviews are submitted using our web interface. If Reviewers delegate some of their reviews, it is imperative that they form (and formulate) their own judgement, provide detailed comments and feel comfortable with the final evaluation submitted. It is not uncommon during the selection, that the Editors request additional review information, for example, to resolve strongly conflicting views received from different Reviewers.

Ranking: The Handling Editor ranks papers based on information computed by the tracking system from electronically filed reviews. The Editors may decide to obtain additional reviews or adjudication from Editors or Reviewers.

Selection: The Editors make the final selection. The Chief Editor, who may not be involved with some of the prior steps, participates in the selection.

Notification: The Handling Editor notifies the author(s) electronically.

Moderation: In rare cases an Editor is assigned as a moderator to an accepted paper to be revised to the satisfaction of the Editorial Board.

Final Submission: Accepted papers are revised according to pre-specified format and electronically submitted.

Hand-over: All accepted papers, manuscript meta-data and any additional editorial material are handed over to the publisher (via the Chief Editor or the Elsevier Authors' site). From here the publisher takes over and contacts authors directly.

Final Proof: The proof of the final submission is sent to the author(s). The author may request final revisions before print.

Copyright Transfer: Copyright transfer forms are sent to the author(s), signed by the author(s) and/or their institutions and returned to the publisher.

Print: The journal issue is produced. Author(s) copies are sent to the author(s).
