Theme

The theme of this WIC7 will be "Career planning and management for women in academic computing". The programme will include a keynote address by Nell Dale, Senior lecturer in Computer Science, University of Texas at Austin,  on reasons why women are disproportionately over-represented at junior levels and under-represented at senior levels in academia, presentations by a panel of invited speakers on issues aimed at encouraging women to proactively manage their careers, discussion sessions and a feedback session
 

Keynote Speaker 

Nell Dale

Nell Dale commenced her academic career as an untenured Instructor in CS at the University of Texas at Austin in 1975 and is currently a Senior Lecturer in that department. A pioneer in encouraging women in science, from 1976 to 1982 she personally interviewed and counselled approximately 500 women as part of a programme designed to bring unemployed or underemployed women with science degrees back into appropriate science careers. In 1990 Nell was the recipient of the University YWCA's Career Achievement Award. In 1996 she received the prestigeous ACM SIGCSE Award, For Outstanding Contributions in Computer Science Education. For many years Nell has been actively engaged in computer science education, as a member of ACM SIGCSE and in her own and her graduate students' research. She is the author of a number of well known introductory programming texts. 
 

Invited Speakers

Val Clarke

Val Clarke, currently an Associate professor in the School of Psychology at Deakin University, has 'jumped through nine promotion, tenure and education hoops' since she commenced working at the University as a part-time tutor in 1978. A social psychologist, her research interests include reasons for the underrepresentation of women in computing, and methods of encouraging more women into the area. A recipient of the Deakin University Post-graduate Association's (DUPA) Supervisor of the Year Award, she is regularly an invited speaker at DUPA conferences.

Anita Jawary

Anita Jawary is a lecturer in communication at Deakin University. She specialises in presentation skills and writing. Anita Jawary is a member of the Women in Leadership group (WIL) at Deakin university and is committed to encouraging young women to pursue their careers in information technology. Anita is particularly interested in the special problems women face in a male-dominated industry. 

Ros Black 

Ros Black has been involved in education and career guidance for 15 years. She holds a Masters qualification in career development and has worked in the postgraduate career education program at RMIT. 

Ros has been an executive member of the Australian Association of Career Counsellors and the Career Education Association of Victoria. In her work for the State Government, she has been involved in the development of key Victorian and national electronic and online career information systems and in the formulation of career guidance policy and strategies for Victoria. 

In her spare time, Ros has been a convenor of community art events, writers’ groups and environmental advocacy organisations. She is dedicated to good friends, good food and the good life in general. Her other interests are subject to change without notice. 

Christine Mingins 

Christine Mingins is Associate Professor and Associate Head of School at Monash University. Her publications have covered Software Methodology, Software Engineering Research in component based development and Software Engineering Education. She was for several years Program Chair of the TOOLS Pacific International Conference Series, and has a wide range of experience in university academic management, including working with a small team to develop Monash’s first corporate plan.

Programme 

In addition to the keynote and invited speakers, the programme will include opportunities for group discussions and a feedback session in areas relating to the topics of the invited speakers.  The provisional programme for WIC7 is available here.

Registration includes admission to all sessions, conference handbook and printed notes, morning and afternoon tea and lunch.

      Registration will be confirmed when payment has been received and processed.  A refund, less an administration charge of $5 will be made on cancellations made prior to 17 November after that date no refunds will be made.  Registrations are transferrable.

    Venue

    The workshop will be held at Mannix College, which is affiliated with Monash University.  Mannix College is located in Wellington Road opposite the Clayton campus of Monnash University

    Accommodation

    Accommodation is available at Mannix College. 
    It is expected that some people will be also attending the Australasian Computing Education conference (ACE2000), which will be held immediately after WIC7 from 4-6 December at the same venue.  Information about booking accommodation at Mannix is available on the ACE2000 website
