Teaching

Virtually all my teaching (1985-2002) was in the field of digital and data communications. I taught subjects in the Computer Science and Digital Systems undergraduate courses, but mainly worked in the Master of Digital Communications. I have retained some on-line information about the subjects I taught. Some people still use the simulator I wrote for the HDLC protocol.

Research Interests

In the past my primary research activity was in digital/data communications. For the past few years I have worked in computational linguistics, particularly in areas relating to Japanese electronic dictionaries and text processing (see the link below.) I recently began a PhD in this field, under the supervision of Tim Baldwin in the Language Technology Group at the University of Melbourne.

Here is a list of my papers.

Things Japanese

I have a particular interest in Things Japanese, and in particular the above-mentioned electronic Japanese/English dictionaries.

From December 2000 to June 2001 I was a Visiting Professor at the Research Institute for the Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa (ILCAA) in the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies in Japan.

I am also a member of the board of the Japanese Studies Centre (a consortium covering all the Universities in Victoria dealing with Japanese matters)
