Current Entry | 水干 [すいかん] /(n) everyday garment worn by commoners in ancient Japan/ (2086030) |
Headword 1 | 水干 |
Reading 1 | すいかん |
Part-of-speech | n |
English 1 | everyday garment worn by commoners in ancient Japan |
English 1 | silk dried after having been washed in plain water and stretched out |
Reference | See below. |
Comment | Roy Miller (49) gives the 2nd translation.
With regard to the value of the Google image link, the garments on display do not seem to be aligned to the garments worn by commoners. P.S. Having been awarded your first "Grrr." of the New Year [2010-01-06], I feel that I should apologize for my misunderstanding. I actually thought that I was simply making an amendment to an existing entry. With my limited references, I could not find "検非違使" without the "庁" tagged on so it seemed like a simple amendment to me. However, if I understand your comment correctly, I should never submit an amended headword. In short, amendments should always be confined to the information "post" the headword. As I now see it, as with regard to a current headword, the options are simply to accept it or to suggest its deletion. Sorry about that. |

The garments were worn by nobles; not commoners.
Re the "Grr"; I thought were were putting in a new entry. 検非違使 is alive and well. I suggest you use the free online copy of Daijirin at http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/ |
Current Entry | 判官 [はんがん] /(n) judge/magistrate/ (1478510) |
Headword 1 | 判官 |
Reading 1 | はんがん |
Part-of-speech | n |
English 1 | judge |
English 2 | magistrate |
English 2 | (arch) 4th (or 3rd) grade official |
English 3 | (arch) assistant district officer |
Reference | See below. |
Comment | Roy Miller (49) states that this means "an ancient 4th (or 3rd) grade official, sometimes translated [as] assistant district officer." My submission is to add that.
He also adds that the "proper" literary reading is "ほうがん". Perhaps that should be included also. I can also find "はんかん" as a reading. See also a corresponding entry on your site, namely: 判官 【じょう; ぞう】 (n) (See 四等官) (arch) inspector (third highest of the four administrative ranks of the ritsuryo period) Perhaps there should be a cross-reference. |
