Comment | With reference to Name's modification [2010-01-24] of my submission [2010-01-23], namely: "if that is the case." Well, I am sure that "it is the case" and that is excellent. In two small steps we have come from the "RH" entry to a valuable indication of common usage which perhaps ought to have a "P" classification.
It is what makes the tentative first step worthwhile. It brings to the novice the full value of such expressions. I am pleased that Name has left the literal meaning in place. It really does help the novice to understand a starting point which leads to the idiom. At least, it lets the novice know that he or she is riding on the right track of basic reading and speaking for a string of sounds; even if the most usual meaning, as generally intended, cannot be entirely linked. A little bit like in English with expressions like, "Well, that's a nice how do you do." Many thanks. |
