Comment | I refer to your comment on my previous submission, namely: "女・is a rare JIS212 kanji. None of my dictionaries show it as the primary kanji for 痩せる. (Because it is in JIS212, it's in an extension of EUC-JP. Firefox, Safari, etc. handle the full EUC-JP coding, but Microsoft only partly implemented in in IE, hence your browser's warning.)
I'll add 女翌ケる to the temporary JIS212 version and it can be merged later. (女翌ケる gets ~3k Googits compared with 4M for 痩せる.) " I have looked at the Google hits and I can see the striking difference. My references were, Nelson [where it shows "瘦"as the principal kanji; Kenkyusha, where it shows only "瘦", likewise, 講談社, and also shogakukan (1993). I shall have to try to get my head around the technical comments which you made and also try to understand the relevance of " '女'・is a rare JIS212 kanji" to the matter. Meanwhile, many thanks for the detailed explanation. |

A little background on the processes here concerning the rather subtle glyph variations relating to 痩 and 瘦. Originally the "official" form was 瘦, so that's how it appeared in Nelson (ca. 1961), etc. In the 1970s there was a push to simplify a number of unnecessarily complex glyphs, so the simpler 痩 was adopted by the JSC to go into the JIS character standards. Some people were a bit grumpy, so in 1990 瘦 was reinstated in the JIS X 0212 "supplementary" standard. Virtually all my references (Kenkyusha 新和英大辞典第5版 [GG5], Kenkyusha 新和英中辞典, 広辞苑5版, etc.) use the modern 痩. An odd one is 大辞林 - the 大辞林 第二版 on the Goo site has "やせる 【▼痩せる/▼瘠せる】", but the version that Kenkyusha have online (スーパー大辞林 3.0 (C) 株式会社三省堂 1995-2008) has 瘦せる/瘠せる, using a bitmap to display the 瘦 because it's not capable of being coded in Shift_JIS. The message is to be wary of old glyphs and old dictionaries. |
