Current Entry | 墳丘墓 [ふんきゅうぼ] /(?) ???/RH/ |
Headword 1 | 墳丘墓 |
Reading 1 | ふんきゅうぼ |
Part-of-speech | n |
English 1 | grave under a mound |
Reference | See below. |
Comment | This "RH" entry seems to be the complete grave and mound, whereas the following full entry seems to be the mound:-
墳丘 【ふんきゅう】 (n) tumulus; grave mound The entry, immediately above, seems to be part of the whole, but I cannot find much beyond usage. For example, if one searches for "墳丘" either in pictures or in text one finds that, in a significant number of cases, the result shows up "墳丘墓." For this headword, which could be promoted, there may be a better translation to be given by one of your experts, but the reading is clearly correct and, as you have said before, the Google images leaves little doubt. There is also little doubt about the first and last kanji, when they are used as a combination [ふんぼ], being "grave or tomb", but when "丘" appears in the middle, the usual reference checks seem to result in failure. P.S. With regard to your note of the other day, namely: "I recommend you look at the 大辞林 entry (e.g. using the Goo site) rather than rely on Roy Miller," I have looked around and I am not sure that I fully understand. Basically, when I am analysing some text [in that particular case some text in Roy Miller's Reader], I usually search all my own reference books for help. If I cannot find what I am looking for, I then see what Roy Miller's states. Sometimes he is not too helpful with explanations [as least not for me]. Whatever Roy Miller states, I then check it out on your site. If I find confirmation, that it fine. It I cannot find any help [for example, often I find the search comes us as an RH], I then check with Goo on your link and also on the [A] link. I then check the Google general search and also the images. If I cannot find much help beyond Roy Miller's statement, I usually submit that. If I find anything better, well, I rely upon that too. After seeing your recommendation, I think that probably your site's link to Goo is not where I should be searching. However, when I searched for "大辞林" on Google, up came Goo's address. I clicked on that and I got the very same link that I get from your own site. So, somehow, I think that I may be failing to click the right buttons somewhere. Anyway, your recommendations are always valued and acted upon. However, on this one, I seem to be a bit of a dunderhead. I hope that the above submission is all right. Roy Miller gives no assistance on the matter, as far as I can see. |

Editorial Comment | The ルミナス和英辞典 says: "tomb embedded in the barrow of the Yayoi period", which matched the 大辞林 entry. |

Comment | Hi,
This entry should be deleted as it's incorrect. It's not even a proper word. While 「尊敬」(そんけい) means "respect" and from there you can derive 「尊敬語」(respectful/honourific language), the antonym 「謙遜」(けんそん) does not have an equivalent transformation 「謙遜語」(けんそん・ご). The correct word is 「謙譲語」(けんじょうご). Cheers. |

Editorial Comment | Since 謙遜語 is in 大辞林 and GG5, I doubt it should be deleted. Both those dictionaries point it to 謙譲語. |

Comment | I think we need to be more careful when glossing katakana expressions that
sound like English. ;-) For example, リニュアル and "renewal" don't overlap in actual usage. In the English i know, we renew contracts, renovate buildings, repair machinery, overhaul structures and systems, and improve the likes of behaviour, performance, and output. Not all of those are リニュアル. ;-) |
