Jim had written: > I'm still at a loss [...] You have dotted POS markers (pre, adj, etc.) around. * (Sound of hand smacking forehand) Sorry... got it! The problem is simply that i included PoS for the _English_ items. I have indicated with dot-dot-dot what i wanted to say by (wrongly) using the PoS. Hope the information is now useable. m(_ _)m |

Comment | In a dialogue, I read "...てくださいませ". The "ませ" did not come up in any of my dictionaries in any indexed form, but the ending seemed familiar enough, e.g., like: いらっしゃいませ.
Also the problem of trying to find things again in texts books is always a plague. However, when I turned to your site for assistance, up came the answer. There was also the cross-reference to the above headword. This submission is about the searcher who comes to your site in the context of general study and looks up a familiar ending like "ます" in order to see your definition. In that context, I thought that it may be helpful to have the reverse cross-reference to "ませ," because, suddenly, with the link, the searcher will be given a chance to understand the relationship of "ませ" with "ます." As a general point, you seemed to invite observations in the context of some of your recent Editorial Comments. Sometimes, I think that the word "dictionary," as comprehended in the Western sense, does not quite work with a language like Japanese. In the Japanese language where, as it is stated in many texts books, the verb form can also be a complete sentence, the simple rules about what should normally be included or excluded in standard alphabetical "dictionaries" are turned on their head. Clearly, all that which is included must be accurate and supported. Equally, exclusions should not be controlled by definite rules about what should be included in any finite sense, rather exclusions should be based upon the variable rule of "common sense." That is, of course, the "common sense" as expressed by the Editor. When the Editor's judgement finds a good match with the hopes of the user, especially the novice user, one not only has a typical "dictionary," one also has an indispensable tool which can be used in the struggle to master the language in question. It was with these things in mind, that I applauded some of your recent observations, in particular the following:- "Generally I'm relaxed about multi-word noun/expressions like this. If someone thinks it's worth adding, well, why not? "Yes, but that shouldn't rule it out. Things like that are useful for beginners, and not-so beginners." (In response to "I don't see the relevance of this entry." on one submission) "I can't see a problem with it." All Editorial comments, of this kind, make the searching of your site very worthwhile. In addition, one feels that any failure to find the answer is not the product of things being excluded by carefully crafted finite rules, but rather simply a temporary lacuna which will be filled in due course as the hard work of your team continues. |

Two editorial requests: (a) make the kana align - where there is katakana in the kanji form, make it katakana in the reading too: きそうエピタキシャルせいちょう (b) for acronyms or initials, make them a separate gloss. |

Changed "sink (in men's estimation)" to "sink (in people's estimation)" as the use of "men's" here sounds very pre-1960s. |

下, this is just to ask you to fix a little problem (like the other two problems with identical headwords you recently fixed): when putting a text containing the phrase 目下注目を集めるの into "Translate Words" we get 目下 【めした】 (n) subordinate; subordinates; inferior; inferiors; junior but not the information we need, which is 目下 【もっか】 (n-adv,n-t) at present; now :-) |

Editorial Comment | I have fixed this "by hand" by adding a combined entry to a file feeding the "glossdic" file. I really should automate this process. |
