Comment | You asked the question, "Can anyone develop good entries for 手はある and 手はない?"
N.B. I have chosen to make a submission on the above headword because, as I understand what you had said previously, it is better not to make a new entry which is not going to survive. In addition, the above headword is relevant to the point which I am making below. In addition, your [A] link on a search for "手はある" gives this "誰にでも得手不得手はあるものだ。 (Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses.)," which also supports the point which I am making below. Either way on the outcome, I hope this submission is helpful. I am sure that you would not have asked this question had there been an obvious answer. I have checked around in my references and there does not seems to be any direct reference to these expression. Hence, I am inclined to conclude this: short of there being some common, well-understood, idiomatic meaning, presumably such an expression can only make sense when used in some context. So, for example, if there is someone present who had had a hand amputated, in context, one could say that "a hand did not exist." If, someone was asking why some work had not been completed on time, one could say that "hands did not exits (to complete the work)." However, in the absence of the "relevant context," the expression cannot mean anything other than "the existence (or non-existence) of a hand." So, in the absence of an existing common meaning, like, say, in the use of "手" in an expression like "手が長い [which, according to my references, means "a long arm" or, more usually, perhaps, meaning, "being light-fingered"], it is difficult to justify any specified meaning. So, unless "NAME's" meaning of "there is a way" for "手はある" is widely supported by existing common usage, I am not sure how one can develop that meaning in anticipation that it would form common usage after it appeared on your site. As you know, I am keen to see you including all possible entries on your site so I am reluctant to conclude that in the absence of knowing the actual context, this should not be included in isolation. With that reluctance, I am hoping that your experts will show that my comments above are incorrect. |
