Reference | EIJIRO |
Comment | The definitions in EIJIRO for both kanji compounds only use negative forms,
from which a meaning of "unsafe" and "serious condition" can be inferred. I checked with a few other online dictionaries and also get the impression from them that these compounds are basically used with negative statements. If the usage is indeed thus restricted, i think this should be mentioned here. (Sorry, i don't have GG5 to check what they say about this). |

Editorial Comment | This had me worried, as that is what it is supposed to do. I checked, and found that when I revised the glossing dictionary file a month ago to have these sorts of combined entries, I overlooked the server's rules that resulted in the incorrect gloss being selected. I have fixed this now so it should be much better in this situation. |

Headword 1 | 冷ます |
Reading 1 | さます |
Part-of-speech | v5s |
English 1 | to cool down |
Comment | It would be a good idea to note the differences among 冷える/冷やす and 冷める/冷ます since both definitions say to cool down. I believe the difference is that 冷える/冷やす means cooling from room temperature. For example putting something in the fridge to cool it. Whereas 冷める/冷ますmeans to cool from a higher temperature towards room temperature. For example letting hot soup cool by leaving it on the counter for 5 mins. I do not remember where I learned this from, but if you look in Kodansha's Communicative English-Japanese dictionary and look up the word cool, then you will see they are consistent with what I have written as pertains to the intransitive case. Of course then we expect the transitive case to be the same |
