金」appears. In my opinion 掛金 translates as insurance makes no sense in the context of the novel. It does if you interpret 「掛金をおろした」 as "to lock the door" or "to pull down the lock of the compartment door". More over, when you look for the word 「掛金」in google images of locks come up. |
