SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Introduction

These are some brief guidelines for submitting additional sentences to the Tanaka Corpus of Japanese-English sentence pairs. Users are invited to submit matched pairs of Japanese and English sentences for inclusion in the Tanaka Corpus and related projects such as the Tatoeba Project.

Guidelines

• no particular format is mandated, but for ease of reading put the Japanese and English sentences on separate lines.

• the Japanese must be in kanji and kana; romaji is not used in the Tanaka Corpus. Use JIS punctuation characters, not ASCII ones.

• submit natural Japanese sentences (sentences written or spoken by native speakers of Japanese).

• briefly state the source of Japanese sentences.

• choose sentences that include new, or poorly represented, vocabulary or grammatical structures (NB: you can tell words in the EDICT/JMdict dictionary that are not currently represented in the Tanaka Corpus because they have no [EX] link)

• make sure the English translation is accurate and in acceptable English. DO NOT send in machine translations.

• we don't mind about:
  • slang and colloquial Japanese.
  • 'adult' language when required for the new vocabulary to be supported.

• please do not submit unaltered sentence pairs from other dictionaries or similar sources.

• the Tanaka Corpus is in the Public Domain. In submitting pairs of sentences, you are agreeing that they are also released to the Public Domain.

• please note that this is NOT a free translation service. Submissions which do not contain one or more sentence pairs will be ignored.
