Synopsis
Theoretical foundations of mobile computing systems, wireless networks, advanced mobile applications. Architectures of mobile distributed computing systems; wireless network classification and management; mobile distributed file systems; failure recovery, fault tolerance and reliability of mobile computing systems; replication in mobile distributed systems; case studies for distributed mobile database systems; mobile information systems; advanced mobile computing applications and the Internet; research trends; synchronization and global time concepts; transaction management mechanisms for mobile computing.

Synopsis
This unit focuses on the theory and practices of information retrieval, in particular, the retrieval of data from non-traditional databases. Examples of the non-traditional databases are XML collections and text databases. The XML technologies covered includes DTD, XML Schema, XPath and XSLT. The text retrieval issues include indexing, storing, retrieving and measuring performance. An introduction to the design and implementation of search engine is also provided.
