Frequently Asked Questions about our BSE
Question : What is the difference between the Bachelor of Comp.Science
(BCS) and Bachelor of Software Engineering (BSE) offered at Monash?
The difference between the BSE and BCS is that the BSE specifically
requires students to complete a stream of software engineering
subjects. While BCS students may take some of these as electives,
they do not have room in the 3 year course to do all 4 years of the
software engineering subjects.
Question : Can students complete the BCS course and do the fourth
year of BSE?
The reverse is true. BSE students can take as electives those computer
science subjects they would not otherwise do, and thereby meet the
requirements of the BCS (but cannot, of course, graduate with both
degrees!).
It is not possible to enter the Bachelor of Software Engineering
honours program after completing a Bachelor of Computer Science.
There is no separate BSE honours course as there is for Computer
Science.
Question : How do I find out about these two courses' requirements?
The course requirements for both degrees are spelled out in the
university handbook, which is available on-line at URL:

Answers to the above three questions were provided by John Hurst,
Associate Dean (Teaching), Faculty of Information Technology in
an email answer to a prospective student in Dec.99,
and cc to me, Sita Ramakrishnan, Course Leader for BSE.
